The Lake County Animal Shelter is at critical capacity after Hurricane Irma. While community support before the storm, including adoptions and shelter break sleepovers, helped get many animals outside of the kennels and into safe homes during the storm, the shelter is currently housing a whopping 210 dogs.
“The hurricane has had a drastic impact on our shelter,” said shelter manager Whitney Boylston. “We have taken in an additional 125 animals since Irma hit, with more coming in each day. Some people’s home are unlivable and they are understandably unable to keep their animals with them any longer.”
Boylston said some of the animals belong to people who left before the storm and haven’t returned home yet, other animals were dropped off.
"They were surrendered to us because the people's living situation has changed. Maybe they had to leave their home, it’s no longer livable, their moving in somebody else. Maybe they couldn't take their pets with them and so we have their pets here."
The shelter is seeking rescue, adopters and fosters to help meet this immediate need.
