Lights off: Cape Canaveral reminds residents of sea turtle nesting season

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — There are still a couple months left in sea turtle nesting season, and Cape Canaveral is making a plea to its residents and visitors to help make sure the turtles make it to the sea.

There were three documented incidents this month where sea turtles did not make it to the ocean.

Officials blame too much light on the coast, which confuses the turtles when they hatch.

The animals use the light of the moon to find their way to sea, and if other light is shining nearby, the turtles may go in the wrong direction and not survive.

In one case this month, a nearby condo had several tenants with the lights on and no curtain drawn.

Code enforcement officials contacted the condo association and passed out informational papers about the turtles to the building.
