Ma Barker house moving across lake to new Marion County property

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — A historic two-story home in Marion County known as the "Ma Barker house" will move from its current location to Carney Island Recreation and Conservation Area in Ocklawaha. The most interesting part is the two-story house will be put on a barge that will be floated across Lake Weir.

The house is currently on private property and is not open to the public.

The Ma Barker home will be moved Thursday. The county warned residents and drivers that there will be heavy traffic congestion along East Highway 25 near where the home is currently located.

WATCH:

The county said people can watch the home being moved to Carney Island from the beach without paying a fee.

Restoration efforts will continue before opening the site of the Barker gang’s last act as a public museum under the supervision of Marion County Parks and Recreation.

The Ma Barker home is being moved because the property was sold, but the sale didn’t include the house.

Opening the house to the public will showcase the 1935 triumph of good vs. evil known as the “Battle of Ocklawaha.” Visitors will walk through a life-size time capsule and see firsthand the bullet holes still peppering the furniture and walls after a four-hour standoff with the FBI and local law enforcement, the county said.
