Updated:SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. —
The Seminole County Sheriff's Office arrested a 49-year-old Oviedo man they said traveled to meet a person whom he believed was a child for sex.
Authorities said they began investigating in November 2012 when the mother of a 13-year-old contacted the Sheriff's Office after learning of inappropriate text messages between her daughter and John Ferguson.
According to the arrest report, there were about 800 text messages on the victim's phone between the teen and Ferguson.
During the investigation, an investigator assumed the online identity of the victim and continued to communicate with Ferguson through text messages and emails, authorities said.
Authorities said after nearly four months of communication, Ferguson requested to meet who he thought was the victim so he could take her to his house to have sex.
Ferguson arrived at the location in Oviedo and was taken into custody without incident, deputies said.
The report also states that Ferguson was a teacher at Trinity Prep through spring 2011, but it is unknown why he left.
"He was definitely in a position of trust when it comes to being a teacher of children," said Kim Cannaday of the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.
Ferguson's neighbors told Channel 9 they're not surprised by his arrest and that they even saw young girls at his home before.
"I am pretty sure I saw a girl with long hair that was really not of age," said neighbor John Harris.
Investigators said they believe there are more victims, and they continue to search through Ferguson's phone and computer.
Ferguson was jailed on $10,000 bond. He posted bail and was released on Sunday.
