Man accused of inappropriately touching child at Daytona Beach boardwalk

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Daytona Beach police said there could be more victims after a man inappropriately touched a young girl on the boardwalk.

John Griffith, 48, was arrested after one of the victims told her mother, who reported it to security, according to police.

The alleged incident happened on Daytona Beach's popular boardwalk that stays packed with families and children.

"You can tell there's a lot of kids around. It's not a hard place for somebody to grab ahold of a kid," tourist Terry Burden said.

According to an arrest affidavit, the 10-year-old victim told her mother she was waiting to play a game at an arcade on the boardwalk when Griffith approached. He's accused of placing his hand on her shoulder, then down her back before grabbing her behind.

Investigators said surveillance cameras at the arcade caught Griffith touching a second child and waving money to entice her.

"You're on vacation. Yes, your guard might be down a little bit but with this story, everybody's guard will be lifted a little more," tourist Wendy Fletcher said.

Daytona Beach police said Griffith has an extensive criminal history but it doesn't include any sex offenses. He's being held at the Volusia County Jail on a $21,000 bond.
