Man accused of kidnapping, rape at Orange County apartment complex

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - Investigators said an Orange County woman was walking to pick up her mail Monday when a stranger kidnapped and raped her.

Deputies were able to capture the man in the area of the woman's apartment complex near Texas Avenue and Americana Boulevard.

The incident started when the woman was walking to the mailbox in the Pointe Vista apartment complex around 4 p.m., according to authorities.

"In the middle of the day, in the middle of the afternoon, middle of summer," said Jeff Williamson with the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators told WFTV the suspect, 44-year-old Vilson Tales, approached the victim and started asking strange questions. Tales began grabbing, biting and slapping the woman before forcing her to an apartment where she was raped, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Tales took the woman's cellphone as it was ringing.

"Apparently her mother or family members were looking for her because she had been missing," Williamson said.

The victim was eventually able to escape from the apartment. She identified the suspect after deputies arrived at the complex, officials said.

A brief standoff ensued between Tales and deputies, but he eventually surrendered. He's being held without bond at the Orange County Jail.
