Man accused of helping murder suspect Markeith Loyd runs into wrong vehicle after posting bail

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A man charged with helping murder suspect Markeith Loyd has posted bail Wednesday afternoon and ran out of the Orange County Jail, a day after a judge significantly lowered his bond.

The bond for Zarghee Mayan was lowered from $400,000 to $20,000 Tuesday after his attorneys accepted an offer from prosecutors. His lawyer said Mayan got out of jail because no one could prove he helped Loyd hide from authorities.

"At the end of the day, justice always prevails. And at the end of the day, Mr. Mayan was finally released from jail," said Lyle Mazin, Mayan's attorney.

Mayan ran into the wrong vehicle at the Orange County Jail. He eventually got into the correct vehicle and left the jail.

Loyd is suspected of killing his ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, who was pregnant at the time, in December, and Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton outside a Pine Hills-area Walmart in January.

Mayan is accused of having hidden money and property. Authorities said he never contacted law enforcement to report his contact with Loyd, and they said he provided him with free food from the restaurant where he worked at.

The state didn’t specify what prompted the sudden change of heart after prosecutors had fought so hard to keep Mayan’s bond high. Prosecutors would only say that they’re “still investigating.”

"One of the great things about having a tough prosecutor, and the prosecutor on this case is a tough prosecutor, is not only are they tough, they're usually thorough. And I think when the prosecutor in this case does their job, they're going to look into the facts as they've been doing now, and realize there's no case to be here," Mazin said.

Jameis Slaughter, Loyd's ex-girlfriend, was freed from jail late Tuesday after her bond was reduced from $500,000 to $20,000 earlier in the day.

Slaughter, who’s accused of giving Loyd money while he was hiding from police, didn’t answer Channel 9’s questions as she walked out of the jail and got into a waiting vehicle.

Charges against Loyd's niece, Lakensha Smith-Loyd, were dropped Tuesday due to a lack of evidence, the state said.
