Man allegedly shoots stepson during argument at Orange Co. home

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange County man is recovering in the hospital Friday after deputies said his stepfather shot him.

Authorities said the two men were arguing at their home on Mooreland Street when the altercation turned physical.

The victim tried to get away after the shooting, but didn't get far.

Witnesses said he got the car stuck on a tree stump in the yard.

"Seems like the son was getting the best of the father, the father went in the house, retrieved the handgun, shot the son once," said Lt. Stacie Moore of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Orange County investigators are looking into what led to Randy Phillips, 48, allegedly shooting his 20-year-old stepson.

Deputies said when they arrived at the home at about 10 p.m. Thursday, they found the stepson shot.

Neighbors said they saw Phillips after they heard the gun go off.

"When he was walking back, he was like, 'I don't care if I go to jail for the rest of my life,'" Neighbor Ayleigha Russell said. "I was focused on the gun and the blood. I had never even seen that before."

Phillips is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery, said authorities.

The name of the stepson was not released.
