Man attacked two women with ax in Silver Springs, deputies say

SILVER SPRINGS, Fla. — A man has been arrested on suspicion he attacked two women with an ax in Silver Springs during a domestic violence incident, Marion County deputies say.

The incident happened at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of NE 129th Terrace.

Investigators said Durant Smith, 40, went home to get some of his belongings when he began attacking two women with an ax and a block of wood.

When deputies arrived, one victim was unconscious and suffering from severe trauma to her head. She was taken to the hospital and is currently in the intensive care unit. She has no brain activity and is only breathing with the aid of a ventilator, investigators said.

A second victim, Brittany Suber, 23, had non-life threatening injuries.

Using K-9 units, deputies found Smith hiding in a vehicle parked off NE 118th Avenue Road and he was taken into custody.

Smith is currently being held at the Marion County jail without bail on charges of attempted murder and violation of domestic violence injunction.
