SWAT situation at Orange County apartment complex ends; 1 in custody

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies have arrested a man who barricaded himself inside an Orange County apartment complex Thursday afternoon.

The incident started around noon at The Gatherings Apartments, on University Boulevard.

Orange County SWAT was called to the scene, and 20 apartments were evacuated during the incident.

Around 3 p.m. SWAT members went into the building and came out with a man whom they took into custody.

Deputies said Patrick E. Herard, 21, was arrested. Court records show 21-year-old Herard has been wanted for almost two years for probation violation stemming from an armed robbery case.

According to investigators, when Sheriff's deputies spotted Herard at the apartment complex he ran. They said they found a weapon that they could be his.

According to deputies, at one point during the standoff, there were about 80 law enforcment officers here at the apartment complex. Sheriff's officials said Herard has a history of violence against law enforcement officers.

Investigators said when deputies entered the apartment, with a search warrant, Herard gave himself up.
