Man behind 11-hour standoff in Orange Co. charged with first-degree murder

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The suspect behind an 11-hour standoff in Orange County is now facing first-degree murder charges, according to deputies.

James Stewart, 29, was arrested Friday night.

Deputies had a warrant out for his arrest, but when they went to arrest him at a home on Aden Court Friday afternoon, he forced the three residents to leave and barricaded himself inside.

A resident of the home said Stewart had been staying with him and his wife, but had recently begun making threats toward them.

Deputies said Stewart peacefully surrendered 11 hours later.

At first, deputies said he was wanted on an attempted murder charge, but they later charged him with first-degree murder, tampering with a witness and possession of a firearm.

It is not clear what prompted the harsher charges.

Stewart was released from jail in April after serving a two-year sentence.
