AUBURNDALE, Fla. — A 4-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the face with a gun he found while home alone, authorities said.

Auburndale Deputy Chief Andy Ray told a local newspaper that Avion Weaver died at a hospital late Friday.

Ray said the 26-year-old owner of the semi-automatic handgun could face charges.

Ray said the man told detectives that the gun had been on a kitchen counter in a box.

However, Ray said the box hasn't been found, and the gun's owner initially told investigators that Avion had fallen and hit his head on a table.

Witnesses said the man left Avion watching TV while he went outside. Authorities said Avion was found wounded after people heard a popping sound inside.

The man lives with Avion's mother, who police said had been picking up her car at the time of the shooting.
