Man dies as he's being booked into jail in Seminole County

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — An autopsy is being performed Thursday on a Seminole County man who deputies say suffered a seizure when he was being booked into the jail and died.

Investigators said 39-year-old Corey Stokes was brought in to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility on charges of cocaine possession with the intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school.

Officials said during the medical evaluation in the booking process, Stokes became disruptive, authorities said and as he was being restrained by deputies, he had a seizure.

Medical personnel immediately called 911 and paramedics responded to the jail.

Stokes was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital, but died en route.

During the preliminary investigation, information was received through other inmates that Stokes may have swallowed significant quantities of cocaine before his arrest.

An investigation is underway.
