Man killed in West Melbourne neighborhood

WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. — A man was found dead in a West Melbourne neighborhood after shots were fired early Sunday morning, according to police.

Officers said they responded to reports of shots fired in the Oak Grove neighborhood around 4 a.m. According to police, neighbors heard a man saying "no" around the time of the shooting.

Using the Brevard County Sheriff's Office helicopter, police said they found a deceased man in between two houses. The death is being investigated as a homicide.

"We're obtaining information, doing a preliminary investigation. We are not actively looking for a particular individual at this point," Deputy Chief Dan Swartzfager said.

The victim is believed to be a man in his 20s. His identity has not been released by police.
