Man gets 15 years for fatal Polk County robbery

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A Polk County man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a fatal robbery.

As part of a deal with Polk County prosecutors to avoid a possible life sentence, Denard McCray, 21, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder. He had been charged with first-degree murder and attempted robbery with a firearm.

Authorities said McCray was one of three men who attempted to rob Oberne Paul in January 2012. One of the men shot Paul in the upper torso, and the group fled the area.

The Ledger reports that the judge at McCray's hearing Tuesday encouraged him to pursue and complete a general education development test during his incarceration.
