ORLANDO, Fla. — Authorities said a driver was killed when his pickup truck crashed into a retention pond near Orlando International Airport on Monday morning.
Orlando International Airport Rescue firefighters were called to Casa Verde Road for the crash shortly before 9 a.m.
Divers from the Orlando Fire Department searched the pond and located the driver, who was taken to Florida East, where he later died.
"It's a terrible unfortunate set of circumstances," said Sgt. Barbara Jones, with Orlando police.
Orlando police will investigate the scene and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
"It appears to be a single-car accident, but again, it's still under investigation," said Jones.
Witnesses told WFTV the driver threw a beer can out of the window once he hit the water. Police said they are still investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
The man was found in the pond between the truck and shore. His identity has not been released.
