Man leads deputies on I-4 chase, tries to overdose in car, investigators say

Deputies said they saved a man’s life after he brought Interstate 4 to a standstill while trying to overdose on drugs.

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office helicopter video was recording when a stolen Dodge Magnum took deputies on a chase and stopped in the middle of the interstate, deputies said.

“Going against traffic now. Over the median. He definitely knows we’re onto him now,” the pilot of the helicopter can be heard saying in the video.

Within minutes, investigators said Christopher McHaffie was headed back toward Orlando and going west at more than 100 miles an hour.

“He’s (in the) emergency lane right now, going back over,” said the pilot.

As McHaffie allegedly sped toward Altamonte Springs, police from all over the area were making a plan.

They got out the spike strips, and before the State Road 426 exit, the car went right through, police said.

“That’s the vehicle. Alright, it got hit with the sticks,” said the pilot.

Instead of getting out of the vehicle, investigators said McHaffie locked the door and took some pills.

Investigators said they then busted out the windows, yanked McHaffie out and gave him Narcan to stop the apparent Opiod overdose.

He remains hospitalized.

Deputies said that once he’s in jail, if he gets bond, they want him on GPS monitoring due to his long criminal history.
