Police: Man uses machete to attack neighbor during altercation

DELAND, Fla. - Volusia County investigators said they are questioning a man who they believe attacked another man with a machete Thursday.

DeLand police said at about 4 a.m. Thursday, they got the call and found a man with several wounds to his head and upper body that were so severe he had to be flown to Halifax Medical Center.

Police said a fight started between neighbors, Luis Torres and Kenneth Flores, at the Sha-De-Land mobile home park.

Flores allegedly pulled out a machete and hit Torres.

"The fight occurred at one location, and the individual who got hurt ran to get help," said Sgt. Chris Estes of the DeLand Police Department.

Police questioned Flores most of the morning while his hand was bandaged. Hours later, he too was taken to the hospital for treatment, but hasn't been arrested.

"You got to look at all the facts before you start making arrests. You got to go through the details, got to determine what happened," said Estes.

Police said they haven't been able to get Torres' side of the story yet because he's been in surgery, and that could dictate who they think was the aggressor in the fight.
