Robbers shoot man in face, leg outside Orange County apartment

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - A man walking to his car from an apartment on Lake Atriums Circle was attacked and shot Wednesday morning, Orange County authorities said.

A witness who lives in the Plaza at Millenium complex with her two daughters and her mother said she woke up at about 5 a.m. to someone yelling about gunshots and hearing someone screaming for help.

"That's the type of people you hope are around when something happens to you," said Sgt. Steve Strickland of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

"For this to be happening like this, you can't even have family come down and visit, because you don't know what's going to happen," the witness said.

Deputies said the victim was visiting from out of town when he was walking to the black BMW he was borrowing. At least two men ambushed him and forced him into the car.

Deputies said one of the men shot the victim in the face and leg with a rifle.

Authorities said they aren't sure whether the crime was random or if the man was targeted.

"It could just be random. He could've been the first person who walked out and these guys were trying to commit a robbery. He could've been targeted," said Sgt. Steve Strickland of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators couldn't talk to the victim right away while he was being treated so they didn't have much information about the car he borrowed.

The victim, whose name was not released, is in stable condition and is expected to survive.

Authorities said they later found a black BMW on fire along Conley Street and are investigating whether it was the man's stolen car.

The flames spread to a nearby home, causing damage, authorities said.
