Man fatally shot by Marion County deputy at drug treatment facility identified

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — A Marion County deputy fatally shot a 30-year-old man Thursday afternoon at a drug treatment facility.

The shooting was reported at about 1 p.m. at the Phoenix House Rehabilitation Center in the Citra neighborhood, deputies said.

Deputies said they were called in reference to a drug offender who had just left the facility, which was in violation of his court-mandated parole.

Deputies said as they approached Dustin Odom, he ran into a wooded area behind the property and when approached, he "violently confronted the pursuing deputies," according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.

Channel 9's Karen Parks asked for more details regarding the violent confrontation, but she was told it's under investigation.

Resident Jordan Patascher told Channel 9 Friday that Odom was trying to turn his life around. His death has shaken residents at the facility, he said.

"During groups, we've just been talking about it ...  Everybody has been expressing their feelings," Patascher said. "Even the counselors were crying."

A deputy, who has been on the force for 12 years, shot Odom, investigators said.

No deputies were injured.

"I understand there's consequences, but at the same time, nobody has to die," said Ryan Crytzer, who is a resident at Phoenix House.

The name of the deputy has not been released.

No other details have been released.

Investigators with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

Deputies and detectives are currently investigating an officer involved shooting in the area of Citra. No deputies are reported injured. We will keep you updated as details become available.
