Police investigate deadly shooting at Orlando apartment complex

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando police said they are searching for the gunman who shot and killed a man in a Millenia-area apartment complex early Friday morning.

Investigators said the shooting happened in the parking lot of The Villages apartment complex on Millenia Bouelvard just after midnight.

Steven Charles said he heard the gunfire blocks away.

"I was playing a game and I heard a gunshot, then I came outside and my friend told me someone got shot," said Charles.

The victim, who has been identified as 33-year-old Maximo Cortes, was found in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

Officers said they have no suspects.

"We have nothing to search for, but as a precaution or avenue to search, we will see if there's anyone leaving the area in such a rush that may be connected," said Sgt. Vince Ogburn of the Orlando Police Department.

Residents told WFTV they heard several gunshots, and Orlando police said they are working the scene as a homicide.

"It's pretty crazy because there are a lot of kids who stay here, too," said Charles.

Police did not say what the shooting may have been about, but the victim's friend told WFTV off-camera that the victim worked at an International Drive restaurant where he had just been paid.

The friend also said Cortes left behind a wife and young child.

Apartment management said they are working with detectives to help catch the killer.
