Man who hit, killed bicyclist during street race asks for reduced sentence

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A high-profile case that helped change Florida law was back in an Orange County courtroom Tuesday.

Robert Roedell was convicted of vehicular homicide in February 2012, and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The victim's family was in court as Roedell's attorney argued for a reduced sentence Tuesday.

However, the sitting judge reset the hearing for next month so the original trial judge can hear the case.

Witnesses said Roedell was street racing when he hit bike rider, 15-year-old Luis Ortega, on New Year's Day in 2008.

Lawmakers later increased street racing penalties under a new law in Ortega's name.
