Marion County couple killed in murder-suicide ID'd

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Investigators believe an elderly man may have killed his elderly wife before taking his own life in Summerfield Monday night.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said 74-year-old Elmo Hines shot and killed his wife, 77-year-old Doris Hines, in the couple's Stonecrest subdivision home.

"Apparently his intentions were to murder his wife and to take his own life," said Capt. James Pogue.

According to the incident report, days before the bodies were found, Elmo Hines told a neighbor that he was going to pick his wife up from an assisted living facility.

The neighbor told investigators Hines said he was going to "take care of the problem."

Neighbors said they heard noises Monday night but didn't know they were gunshots.

"But they didn't know where it came from or anything else like that and so they just kind of dismissed it," said Pogue.

The neighbor said they noticed Hines' car hadn't moved so they looked through the windows of the home and made the horrifying discovery.

"He was lying on the floor and obviously he was not moving and there was a lot of blood," the neighbor told Channel 9.

Deputies are still interviewing family and friends to better understand Hines' state of mind prior to the shootings.
