Marion County man shoots, kills suspected intruder, deputies say

SUMMERFIELD, Fla. — A man is accused of shooting and killing a suspected intruder in a Summerfield home, Marion County deputies said.

The home invasion happened at 10:30 p.m. Monday on SE 158th Place.

"I don't know. It's kind of surreal. I didn't think when I was going to sleep last night that I was going to have to take somebody's life for coming into my house," Shawn Petterrson told Channel 9's Myrt Price.

Petterson told deputies the suspects kicked open the back door of the home shot Petterson's dog, which is expected to recover.

"I just seen the gun and the shadows coming right for my door. They stuck the gun up to the door and started firing into my bedroom," Petterson said.

Petterson said he fired back, hit one of the intruders and the others grabbed him and took off. The man was dropped off outside Ocala Health Summerfield Emergency Room, where he died.

"It's crazy. I don't have any enemies and I don't know who would have done that," Petterson said.
