Marion County sheriff major accused of helping friend avoid DUI charge

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — A major with the Marion County Sheriff's Office will be punished for trying to help a friend avoid a DUI charge.

An internal affairs investigation focused on a traffic stop that was caught on a dashboard camera in January.

Investigators said a deputy stopped Mathew Tillander on County Road 326 for speeding and suspicion of DUI.

The deputy said he released the driver after getting a call from Maj. Tommy Bibb to hold off until he could talk to the sheriff.

The investigation resulted in a two-day suspension without pay for Bibb.

Bibb must also receive more training.
