Marion County students, parents working to get missed refunds for events due to COVID-19

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — The coronavirus pandemic caused many events and celebrations to be postponed or canceled and led many people to work to get refunds.

Like many other students throughout Central Florida, students in Marion County missed out on trips and events due to the virus.

Some of those students and their parents are working to get refunds for those missed events.

“It was brought up to the boards attention that we had some schools that were having to do more work to get refunds from those particular entities,” said Kevin Christian, of Marion County Public Schools.

Officials said students at North Marion and Lake Weir were having issues with the refunds.

As a result, the school board decided to take action.

"What the district is doing in some cases is actually advancing those refunds, meaning the district is covering the cost of those refunds and then the district will be reimbursed by those individual vendors or those individual theme parks or hotels or whatever the case may be,” Christian said.

Officials said some families have already received their refunds.

For those who haven’t, officials said it should be coming in the mail.
