Merritt Island assisted living facility plagued with problems, records show

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — There are new concerns about an assisted living home in Brevard County and whether it’s properly caring for the patients who live there, after records showed it altered records.

Thursday, firefighters who answered a 911 call at Yan Yan Healthcare on Merritt Island about a patient who had fallen out of bed, found no staff on the property looking after patients.

Channel 9’s Julie Salmone learned the facility has been fined before for falsifying records, and for a lack of staff training.

Laura Purcell, who owns Home Instead Senior Care in Brevard County, found the incident alarming.

“That really concerns me. Someone should always be on the premise,” Purcell said.

According to the Agency for Health Care Administration, Yan Yan Healthcare has been cited for deficiencies in the past and the state fined the facility $2,750 last August for providing altered or falsified records.

State records show during a visit last year, the facility provided altered, defaced or falsified records in order to attempt to meet the minimum requirements its license would be renewed.

WFTV called the facility Thursday and Friday, but never got a call back
