Social media rumors force lockdown at Merritt Island High School

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. — Merritt Island High School has been placed on lockdown for the remainder of the school day Thursday, according to school officials.

A Brevard County Public Schools representative said the school was placed on secure lockdown after "social media incidents that have caused disruptions to the school day."

According to school officials, rumors started through Facebook and Twitter said that if there were eight fights in the school during the week the school would close for a week.

Officials said the lockdown was precautionary while they put an end to the rumors.

According to school officials parents were notified through voice messages sent out.

Officials said students were in their classrooms with instructors.
