VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. - Detectives in Volusia County believe a 79-year-old woman's disappearance is very suspicious.

Investigators said Rose Bruce was reported missing by her daughter-in-law just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Bruce was supposed to pick up her daughter-in-law, Cathy Ryan, from work, but Bruce never showed up.

Ryan told deputies she works with Bruce at a nearby Walmart.

"She got out of work at 10 p.m. and was supposed to come back and pick me up at eleven. She didn't, so at 11:20 I walked home," said Ryan.

Ryan said she walked to their apartment on San Marco Drive near Ormond Beach and the fire alarm was going off. She said she found smoke coming from an oven, but didn't find Bruce.

"She had food under a broiler and when I came home, I mean, if I wouldn't have come home when I did there probably would have been a fire," said Ryan.

Ran called 911 around 1:30 a.m.

Officers said Bruce's purse and groceries were inside the home, but her blue 1997 Honda Accord and cellphone were missing.

Bruce's Honda has Florida plate number K383JA.

Officials said Bruce has no history of Alzheimer's, or dementia.

"She has no history of this. (She) has never left home before and according to the daughter-in-law; has no diagnoses of any type of mental condition," said Brandon Haught, spokesman for Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said they were trying to ping her phone to locate it, but said it is turned off.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
