Mom charged with manslaughter in boy's drowning

DAVENPORT, Fla. — A woman faces aggravated manslaughter charges after her 3-year-old son drowned in a swimming pool at a home in Davenport.

The Ledger of Lakeland reports Polk County Sheriff's deputies arrested 27-year-old Jennyse Frederick on a child neglect charge after Maylik Sheffield was found unresponsive in the pool. The state attorney's office decided to charge her with manslaughter after an investigation. She was arrested Wednesday.

She told deputies she'd been swimming with the children at her friend's house but went inside with Maylik and her 2-year-old before noticing he was missing and finding him in the pool.

Friends in the house told authorities she had not been swimming and that she left the boy alone in the living room near a sliding glass door that leads to the pool.
