More changes in store for Maitland Boulevard drivers

MAITLAND, Fla. — In two days, drivers will see even more changes on Maitland Boulevard as officials plan to open a new exit ramp from east Interstate 4 and close the existing ramp.

The new ramp is one of several changes the Maitland Boulevard/I-4 interchange has seen in the past few months as the I-4 Ultimate Project continues.

The new east exit ramp from I-4 onto Maitland Boulevard will be about 1,500 feet farther down than it currently is when it opens Wednesday.

Officials urge drivers to be cautious getting off on the new ramp, as they will have to merge onto Maitland Boulevard.

Drivers on I-4 west will also have a new ramp to Lake Destiny and Maitland Boulevard by next Friday.

Meanwhile, near the I-4 /408 interchange, streets and parking spots underneath the interstate will have to close too from time to time.

“It'll make it even more difficult to park down here,” said driver Dave Dancey.

Lanes on the highway will also be narrower.

“That's within safety standards, and that's what we've seen in a lot of areas along the 21 miles,” said David Parks of I-4 Ultimate project.

I-4 drivers by Universal Studios will also face changes by Friday morning. The west lanes will be moved to the right.

“For folks exiting to northbound Kirkman Road, they are going to have to exit 1,500 feet sooner than what they do now,” Parks said.

The changes on the I-4/408 interchange will begin after Jan. 1.

I-4 ultimate officials said if they have to close parking spots under the interstate while they demolish parts of the roadway, they will work to keep a certain number of spots open as required by the project.
