Multimillionaire Melbourne Beach jackpot winners live a modest life, neighbors say

MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. — Maureen Smith and David Kaltschmidt had their life turned upside down in February 2016 when they took home a third of a $1.5 billion Powerball jackpot.

Their life, though, doesn’t seem to have changed much, according to their neighbor Roger Kershaw.

“Nothing’s changed for him except, obviously, he doesn’t have that pressure over him about what he’s going to do for a living anymore,” Kershaw said of Kaltschmidt.

The jackpot winners purchased their winning ticket at a nearby Publix.

Aside from getting a couple new cars and putting a new coat of paint on their home – where they have lived for years -- the couple does not live like multimillionaires, Kershaw said.

Their interaction with their neighbors also hasn’t changed, he said.

“Nothing’s changed as far as the relationship with the people around here,” Kershaw said. “Everybody talks nice about them too.”
