DEBARY, Fla. - Deputies said they have identified and interviewed the person of interest connected to a rape in DeBary.

Investigators are not releasing the name of the man, who is now considered a person of interest and not a suspect, according to deputies.

The 27-year-old victim told deputies she was leaving Shotz Sports Bar in DeBary just before 2 a.m. on Friday when a man offered to walk her home.

The woman said after walking on S. Charles Richard Beall Boulevard together for a while, she asked the man why they were going in the opposite direction of her home.

According to the victim, the man told her he needed to stop at his house, so they took a short cut through a patch of woods.

The victim said that’s when the man raped her.

Volusia County deputies think it may have been a crime of opportunity, because the man didn’t show a weapon or even say he had one.

They then both walked away in separate directions, and the woman went to a friend's house, and the friend reported the alleged rape to the sheriff's office.

Residents said the attack is out of character for the area.

“It’s very scary, extremely scary,” said resident Debbie Smith. “You should be able to walk somewhere without being attacked.  My daughter and her family live down here, and I don't want to have to worry about that."

The person of interest was not arrested and the investigation is ongoing, according to deputies.
