ORLANDO, Fla. - A student was arrested at Colonial High School Wednesday and charged with carrying a loaded handgun, authorities said.
A district spokesperson said law enforcement officers were on campus questioning three students about an incident that happened off campus.
While they were questioning the students, one of them voluntarily told law enforcement about a .33-caliber pistol in his bag.
School officials sent out an alert saying the student was carrying the gun in his back pack.
"One student made a poor decision of bringing a loaded handgun in his backpack to school today. The student was taken into custody and removed from campus. Law enforcement advised us that the campus is safe," the alert said.
Although an alert was sent, school officials didn't lock the school down.
Some students said they had no idea anything had happened until hours later.
"Not even like a whisper in the hallway," said 12th grader Darren Crittenden.
Marti Morris got an alert message from her daughter's school, but doesn't think they did enough to keep students safe.
"If there's a gun, they should have locked everything down," Morris said.
