Officials: Man ran into school, repeatedly punched principal

LAKELAND, Fla. — A man ran into Oscar Pope Elementary in Lakeland and punched the principal several times Monday, said Polk County investigators.

A parent said Elester Trudell was yelling at a student outside the school before he ran inside.

School officials said the door he used was unlocked for 45 minutes every morning for teachers to enter.

"The custodian, he opens this door about 7:15 and then he locks it about 8," said Principal Qvonda Birdsong.

Birdsong said from now and on, that door will be locked all the time and everyone will have to enter through the front door.

Trudell remains in the Polk County Jail on $40,000 bail.
