DELAND, Fla. — It’s been a year since an 87-year-old DeLand man was killed during a home invasion and his killer has not been caught.

Carl Husfeld struggled with a burglar in his home Dec. 8, 2016. Husfeld was hit in the face by a door during a burglary at his home on Oak Circle, Volusia County deputies said.

Husfeld was able to call 911, but later died at a hospital.

Husfeld's girlfriend Lorraine Bollen told Channel 9's Mike Springer on Thursday that though she knows an arrest in the case will not bring him back, it will help her rest easier knowing his killer is off the streets.

“I remember Carl as one of the most thoughtful, warm, generous people I've ever known,” Bollen said of her boyfriend of seven and a half years. “I was with him when he died. I held him. Sang to him and I was with him about a half an hour after he died. I just held him while he was still alive.”

Bollen said it's been difficult watching time go by and no new leads or evidence surfacing.

Bollen said Husfeld had three children and six grandchildren who live in California.

Anyone with information on the burglary or Husfeld's death is asked to contact Crime Stoppers online at www.westopcrime.com, or by phone, at 888-277-TIPS.
