Cops: Father fatally shot son who allegedly threatened suicide

ORANGE CITY, Fla. - A father shot and killed his son inside their mobile home in Volusia County Tuesday night, and deputies said the shooting may have been justified.

Authorities said William Shope, 68, remained at the home until deputies arrived and spoke with them. His son, Adam Shope, 39, was found by detectives in a bathroom of the N. Volusia Avenue home at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday with a gunshot wound to the chest, deputies said.

Shope told investigators that Adam had gotten William's handgun and threatened to commit suicide.

Shope said he was able to get the gun away from his son, but then Adam threatened him with a closed fist and an aggressive stance. William said he was in fear for his life and fired one shot at his son, and then called for help.

Deputies said they have not decided whether charges will be filed until all information and evidence can be reviewed, and the results of an autopsy are available.
