Fire displaces couple from apartment, woman shot in leg

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.,None — An Orange County couple forced from their apartment by a fire Saturday night became victims of a shooting Sunday morning.

The strange series of events started with a raging apartment fire, and it ended with a husband trying to help his wife get to the hospital after she was shot in the leg.

"I'm freaking out because my wife got shot," said the victim's husband, Ivan Icquierdo.

The fire started in the man's kitchen around 8 p.m. Saturday. When firefighters got the flames out, two apartments had been destroyed and four others were left unlivable. The residents in those units were relocated to other vacant apartments in the complex.

Icquierdo and his wife were two of them.

"We were sleeping and all of the sudden I hear this gunshot and I jumped out of the bed. Next thing you know, I see my wife bleeding," Icquierdo said.

Investigators said Icquierdo's wife was sleeping on a mattress that was on the floor when she was struck in the leg.

Icquierdos' neighbor told deputies he was putting a gun away when it went off.

Deputies are investigating the case. They believe it was an accidental shooting and it does not appear that the gun owner will face charges.

Neighbors told WFTV that doctors were not able to remove the 9 mm bullet from her leg but she was released from the hospital.
