Orlando man receives red-light camera ticket for car that's not his

ORLANDO, Fla. — An Orlando man is fighting a red-light ticket from a city he said he was never in and a car he doesn't own.

The 20-year-old student got a ticket from Miami-Dade County with a picture of a vehicle running a red light, but he said the picture proves it’s not his vehicle.

Andrew Rainey said when he got the ticket he thought it might be from an Orange County red-light camera.

He said he doesn’t have the time to make a trip to Miami to take care of the ticket.

“I've got physical therapy going on, I've got school, I've got two jobs,” Rainey said.

Rainey received pictures from a Miami court of a car running a red light.

Although the license plate in the picture may look similar to his plate, the fourth letter doesn’t match up to what’s on Rainey’s plate.

“I’ve never been to Miami. I started looking at [the picture] more closely and I was like, ‘Oh this is not good,’” Rainey said. “Immediately I noticed the roundness of the car. My car is a truck and it has a square back.”

The car in the picture is a sedan with brake lights in the rear window, which is not the same as Rainey’s car.

Rainey thought he could easily clear up the situation once he called the courts and someone checked the picture against the vehicle registered to him, but he was wrong.

“They told me I’d have to come to Miami,” he said. “I don’t have the time or money to do that.”

Channel 9’s Renee Stoll tried to contact the Miami-Dade court but it has not responded.
