ORLANDO, Fla. - A soldier who was injured in Iraq and now lives in central Florida was awarded a Purple Heart Wednesday night.
The award was presented to retired Sgt. Hector Latorre Jr. during the annual Armed Forces Day celebration at the Citrus Club.
Latorre treated thousands of people as a combat medic and is credited with saving an estimated 75 lives.
In 2009, he was severely wounded by a roadside bomb.
Wednesday, he was surprised with the prestigious award.
Col. Patrick Connors with the U.S. Army said they wanted to host a big event for him and not just pass it off to him in the mail.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer declared May 22 as "Sgt. Hector Latorre Jr. Day."
