OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. - A 70-year-old Osceola County woman is fortunate to be alive after she was the victim of a violent home invasion.
Deputies said the victim, whose name hasn’t been released, awoke in her Rosedale Avenue home to find a pillow covering her face and the suspect lying on top of her.
Investigators said 19-year-old Jose Diaz-Concepcion carried out the crime in the senior community where he once did landscaping work.
Detectives believe Diaz-Concepcion targeted the victim and broke in during the middle of the night. They said he covered her face with a pillow, and she struggled to gasp for air.
Then, investigators said the suspect demanded cash, but the victim only had her bank card, so she gave that up and Diaz-Concepcion fled the scene.
Neighbors said the community is one where residents feel safe, but they're now afraid to leave their windows open.
"How much scarier can it get to wake up with a pillow over your face and a gun to your head?" said neighbor Linda Bentz.
Bentz said everyone is on edge since they've never had problems like this before.
"We're astounded. We're afraid. We're watching out extra carefully," she said. "If we see you and we don't know you, we're going to ask, 'Who are you visiting and why are you here?'"
The victim told Channel 9 she's afraid now that more criminals are going to target the neighborhood.
