Osceola woman charged in boyfriend's shooting death

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. - An Osceola County woman who claims she shot her boyfriend in self-defense was officially charged with murder Thursday.

Channel 9 reported Wednesday that Wendy Hanks was arrested in the shooting death of her boyfriend, 39-year-old Darren Haverty.

In court on Thursday, Hanks was held in a secure cage as she was charged and denied bond. County officials said the cages are reserved for potentially dangerous inmates.

"She'd indicated she and her boyfriend had been involved in a verbal and physical altercation," said Twis Lizasuain of the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.

According to the sheriff's office, Hanks told deputies Haverty battered her and then approached her with a knife, which is when she shot him.

"Initially, she did cooperate with the investigation," said Lizasuain. "She was brought in, interviewed and she did claim self-defense."

But the sheriff's office said evidence gathered from the crime scene and conflicting statements didn’t support the self-defense theory.
