DELAND, Fla. - A man armed with a knife was shot and killed by deputies Sunday afternoon near U.S. 17-92 and Firehouse Road, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Donald Edward Brown III, 32, was identified as the knife-wielding man, and Erin Finney, 24, was identified as his accomplice.
Finney faced a judge Monday, who ordered her to remain in the Volusia County Jail without bail.
Deputies said it all began at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday when Brown and Finney robbed two women at 1299 Saxon Boulevard in Orange City and then drove off with the victims' wallets.
The two were located at about 12:51 p.m. in DeLand, investigators said.
When deputies pulled the car over, Finney, who was driving, surrendered, officials said.
Brown, who was armed with a knife, got out of the car and wouldn’t cooperate, deputies said.
Deputies said they repeatedly ordered Brown to drop the weapon, but when he didn't, they opened fire.
A knife was located in Brown's hand following the shooting, deputies said.
Two vehicles in the area were hit by deputy gunfire. No one was hurt.
"One of the (bullets) ricochets came and ended up hitting the fender, going through my fender. Me and my girl are sitting there and she is pregnant, I mean, it was a scary situation for us," Richard McCory said.
McCory's red truck was one of the vehicles hit by bullets during the shooting. He said he was on his way to lunch when he saw everything.
“They told him to put his hands up and comply, and he went back and forth yelling and screaming, (and) things got escalated,” said McCory.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure.
The deputies involved in the shooting, Sgt. Justin Stewart, 32, Brandon Coker, 28, and Joshua Sheen, 24, are on administrative leave, which is standard following deputy-involved shootings.
Finney was arrested and charged with armed robbery and felony murder.
