Petition aims to turn Orlando's Lake Ivanhoe into beach

ORLANDO, Fla. - There's a petition going around that aims to turn an Orlando lake into a beach.

The idea for Lake Ivanhoe is part of a 10-year plan to improve the city, but there are some obstacles in the way of putting the proposal into action.

"It would give the kids somewhere to play," resident Ann Fairweather said.

Many residents are in favor of adding more activities around Lake Ivanhoe and a petition has been created on

"(It) would be great business for Ivanhoe Village," Michelle Fogelsanger said.

"If there was a beach and sandy area the kids would play in that would be wonderful," resident Mac Finnane said.

The movement started when a list of items was discussed for Orlando's downtown vision plan for the next 10 years.

But the idea is facing a few challenges regarding the environmental impact on the lake's ecosystem and erosion. Another issue is water quality for swimmers.

"The things I tend to pick up are bottles, cans, but for the most part the lake is fairly clean," Fairweather said.

Officials said they plan to consider ideas for the downtown vision plan in September.
