ORLANDO, Fla. - Orlando police still have identified a 24-year-old man officers shot and killed in the middle of Interstate 4, shutting down the interstate for more than four hours Monday morning.
Orlando police said an officer fatally shot Joseph Paige, who was carrying a gun while standing in the middle of I-4.
The shooting happened as police were chasing a car belonging to another suspect of an armed robbery early Monday. Officers stopped the car to question that suspect, but additional officers at the scene noticed Paige wielding a gun and standing in the middle of the interstate near Amelia Street.
Police said officers engaged the suspect and were forced to shoot, killing Paige.
"When it was stopped, there was one person in that vehicle. So, we don't know if that person may have been dropped off at some point. Those are the questions that detectives are trying to find out," said Sgt. Jim Young of the Orlando Police Department.
It's unclear what prompted the shooting, and no other details were released.
Authorities are investigating whether the two incidents are related.
The shooting caused heavy delays during rush hour traffic Monday for about four hours.
The mugging victim declined to press charges, police said.
