KISSIMMEE, Fla. - A man who spent five years in prison for snatching purses is back behind bars, accused of the same crime.

Joseph Aviles was arrested Thursday morning after police said he targeted a woman in the parking lot of the Publix near Colombia and John Young Parkway in Kissimmee.

"We had a couple of witnesses who saw it. We were able to get a vehicle description, stopped the vehicle and took the person into custody," said Stacie Miller of the Kissimmee Police Department.

Investigators said the woman was walking in the parking lot when Aviles sped up behind her and tried to grab her purse.

"That is extremely dangerous, depending on where the purse is on the person, if it's wrapped around their arm, you could easily pull the person down the road with you," said Miller.

Police said Aviles has experience with kind of dangerous crime. He did prison time a little more than a decade ago for the same thing. Police said they believe he's a serial purse snatcher who got busted again.

He was interviewed by police, but refused to talk.

"He's lawyered up. He's not cooperating with us at this point, but we do have positive identification on him, so he will be going to jail today," said Miller.

Kissimmee police said they believe Aviles is linked to at least two other crimes in the city, but they are also reaching out to other agencies to see if they have crimes that might be solved by his arrest.
