Police investigating threat at Brevard County high school

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. — A school threat Wednesday morning prompted parents Wednesday morning to pick up their children from Rockledge High School.

The threat was made on social media, but police said it was not credible.

However that did not stop parents from picking up their children from school anyway out of an abundance of caution.

"Very uneasy with a granddaughter here. (I'm) trying to get her out of school," said Clyde Bell.

A female student was chatting with her friends on Snapchat when she told them not to come to class, police said.

"The Snapchat was just of the student with a little topic underneath that said, 'Don't go to school tomorrow,' that was it," said Bob Weigel, with the Rockledge Police Department.

Police said they contacted the student, who showed others a phone with a photo of a gun. Police said they didn't find a gun on the student or at his house.

Between 300 and 400 students did not show up for school Wednesday. The school has about 1,500 students.

Meanwhile, this is the second incident that has concerned parents in 24 hours. Two students were arrested Tuesday after a gun and drugs were found on the campus. The two incidents are not related, police said.

“I want to assure you that we take safety very seriously. Based on assertions from our police partners, we believe the campus is safe for normal school activities,” a spokesperson for the Brevard County School District said in a statement.
