Police: Lake County mother crashes car, leaves scene with injured baby

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A Lake County mother was arrested after police said she got drunk, wrecked her car to the point where it rolled over and left the accident scene with her injured baby.

It happened near State Road 19 and Eichelberger Road in Tavares.

Police said April Kaye left her 4-year-old child at home to buy more beer.

“No regard for the safety of the children, whatsoever. No attempt to call law enforcement. The child did go to the hospital with some superficial injuries to be checked out,” said Sgt. Jon Hall of the Tavares Police Department. “Who knows what could have happened. The car completely rolled over and ended up back on its wheels,."

Police were already responding to a report of a woman stumbling around with a young child when the accident was called in.

Witnesses led officers to the camper they saw Kaye walk to, and when they arrived, they said she was very intoxicated and trying to hide.

They also found the 4-year-old child in the home.

“While we were there, she actually ended up throwing one of the children on the floor of the camper,” Hall said.

Police said her husband was at work during the accident.

The infant is in custody with the Department of Children and Families while the 4-year-old stays with family friends.

Kaye was arrested on charges of child abuse, resisting arrest, and leaving the scene of an accident.
