Police: Man arrested in robbery, shooting at motel near Universal

ORLANDO, Fla. — A 24-year-old Orlando man was arrested Tuesday evening in the robbery and shooting of a man at a motel in the city's tourist district, the Orlando Police Department said.

Bruce Lee Smith robbed a man of his cellphone and shot him in the lower torso Monday evening outside his room at the Super 8 motel on American Way, near International Drive and South Kirkman Road, police said.

Investigators said the victim, whose identity hasn't been released, was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Surveillance footage appears to show a man climbing a flight of stairs before pulling a pistol from his pocket. It's unknown why he shot the victim, investigators said.

Smith was arrested during a traffic stop at the Orlando International Resort Club, a motel near Grand National and International drives, an arrest report said.

"It is just a little gun, bro," the report quoted Smith as telling the officer. "Why are we going through all of this?"

Smith, whose criminal history includes 46 felony charges, was released from prison in October, police said.

He was booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of attempted murder, robbery, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.
