SANFORD, Fla. — Police in Sanford arrested a man they said jumped into a stranger's car, sexually assaulted her, then pistol-whipped and beat a good Samaritan who stepped in to try to help.
The good Samaritan, Darrell Chavis, told Channel 9 the victim was a friend of his.
Chavis said he did not have time to think when he went after Tony Webb.
“It gets a little emotional because, like I said, I have kids. That could have happened to my kids, anybody's kids,” Chavis said. “I have nothing to say to him.”
Sanford police said Webb got into the woman's car and forced her to perform a sex act on him outside Chavis' home last month.
“I was in my house, going to tend to my daughter, and I hear outside someone beeping a horn, saying 'Darrell help me. Help,'” said Chavis.
When Chavis went outside and tried to help, police said Webb pistol-whipped him, grabbed him by the hair, and dragged him back into his home, where Webb continued to beat Chavis.
"I was just trying to defend myself, blocking myself, trying to defend myself from getting whooped,
" said Chavis.
Police said Webb ran away after someone called 911.
But police said Webb came back the next day to beat Chavis again, and for calling the police.
An officer arrested Webb Sunday night during a traffic stop.
“I don't call myself a hero. I just call myself a good citizen doing a good deed,” said Chavis.
Channel 9 spoke with Webb’s grandmother Monday, She said Webb has gotten mixed up with a bad crowd.
Webb was arrested and remains in the Seminole County Jail without bail.
He has a hearing on Jan. 3.
